Frequently Asked Questions
How can I use this product to receive Freesat?
The service makes use of the same fleet of satellites as satellite service Sky Digital: Astra and Eurobird 1. This means that any satellite dish which has been used to receive this service will be capable of receiving Freesat, with the addition of this receiver.

Some serious flaws with this card and software August 13, 2010 Peter Scott (Norfolk) It is a pity about the card. It installs easily but it has two servious flaws. First it is a lot less sensitive than a satellite set top box. I wanted to use it mostly to listen to BBC radio whilst working on my computer. After scanning I found all of the TV channels but only a few BBC radio channels and none of the ones that I wanted. After many tries, including a manual tune of the specific frequency, I gave up and sent the card back for a refund. I have now bought a Humax HD box and this receives all of the radio channels. It is at the end of about 20 metres of cable, but it is top-quality cable. On an overcast and rainy day, the Humax shows only medium signal quality on some of the radio channels but still receives them perfectly, so it is definitely a sensitivity problem.
The other problem is with the software. Without going into boring detail it is very user-unfriendly. Ther manual is diabolical, full of technical gibberish. I am quite knowledgeable about satellite but was still hard pressed to understand some of it. It is a great pity, because the snapshot and video recording was very good. The high definition picture was good, though there was occasional pixelation even though my video card and computer are much better than specified by the card supplier.
Excellent cross-platform DVB-S2 card July 13, 2010 Darkhorse 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
This was the second card purchased for a media centre PVR system designed to tune to broadcasts from Astra 2, Eurobird 1 and Thor 5 satellites, and after some problems with other cards it's refreshing to see how well this card works.
The card itself is well built, clearly having gone through a decent production process. As an electronics engineer, I'd be happy to have produced a board like this. It's good to see that the well-documented Conexant demodulator is supported by high quality passives and auxiliary components. The card originally ran quite hot, but by diverting even a small amount of air over the surface it was back down to just over room temperature.
The card is supported by recent Linux kernels as standard, and I had no problems talking to it with 2.6.34 - only the microcode had to be downloaded and was then detected and automatically loaded. The card showed up as a DVB device, and MythTV happily identified it as a DVB-S2 card with DiSEqC support - it realyl couldn't have been easier.
Tuning was no problem - pointing the satellite then giving the details for one channel, over 900 channels were quickly locked to. There's no CI (not a problem for me as I'm not going to pay for anything over my TV license anyway), so encrypted content is not available.
Even though the card has a single tuner, it will supply the whole transport stream (or indeed anything else the transponder is transmitting) to you, so with good software it will let you record multiple channels on the same tuner - MythTV is quite happy to record five channels at once with this card. HD transmissions work just as well as SD, and no problems have been noted with data streams or the EPG.
All in all, this is an excellent card. I've not tried the remote control (I use a Bluetooth PS3 remote to avoid line of sight issues since the PC is hidden in the corner of the room) or the supplied software, so can't comment on those other than to say that the problems described in other unfavourable reviews all seem to be caused by the software being used with this card. I'd highly recommend it, especially for those wanting to build a DVB-S2 capable PVR.
Good for price March 29, 2010 Mrs. H. E. Howard (UK) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Does exactly the same as the other branded makes i.e Hauppage and Technisat. So a good card for half the cost of the other brands.
Has drivers for Win 7 X64, support site a bit hopeless though. Will drive a motorised dish if required etc.
Have used with various software, MediaPortal is best, although it worked okay with others. Least succesfully with Windows 7 Media Centre which didnt like scanning channels and is pretty hopeless anyway for watching TV with.
TBS DVB-S2 - best with windows 7 Media Centre March 6, 2010 Christopher J. Thompson (UK) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Purchased one of the last of these products. It arrived on time and I spent no time getting it installed into my Acer desktop PC.
I initially installed it using Windows 7 Media centre and it soon found over 250 channels. Picture quality is good on SD and very good on HD with no pixilation using an I7 Quad core 2.67 cpu and 6GB of RAM and Nvidia GTS 240 video card. The (black) remote is a waste of time as it does not function with Media Centre.
The supplied software is none too clever. DVB Dream is OK but pixilates on HD using a standard SKY mini dish, which is a shame as it managed to tune into ITV HD but no sound and like I said pixilation. BBC HD has sound but pixilation. The Blaze TV software is not impressive. I even downloaded a trial of ver. 6.0 but the quality is poor and operation sluggish.
In conclusion, a good card but use it with Windows 7 Media Centre on a high spec. PC to get the best results. I am just hoping now that Microsoft update the program so that I can tune into ITV HD and get picture and sound. That would put the icing on the cake!
The next purchase will be a Media Centre remote and a bigger monitor.
Don't buy if you use Windows 7 Media Centre February 25, 2010 T. Smith (United Kingdom) 0 out of 3 found this review helpful
Drivers are available for Windows 7 and the included software does work (although I found HD playback very choppy) - but I could not get Windows 7 Media Centre to receive any signal. Amazon's return process worked well as usual.
