Perfect! March 9, 2010 M. Gardner (Burton-Upon-Trent) I have been looking for something like this for months and have finally found it. I read reviews of it being complicated to use-Rubbish! It is easy to use, i didn't even need to look at the instruction manual. Dubbing is easy to use it is just one click. Recording comes out in brilliant quality (HDMI cable is needed for best quality). It does exactly what it says on the box!
A slight problem is that the externally mounted fan can be a bit loud at first but you adjust to it easily as you only hear it when the T.V. is off etc. Another is that it doesn't rewind tapes quick enough, but it doesn't bother me that much.
This product is exactly what i wanted, its well worth the money for what you get. In my opinion Go For It!
Toshiba dvd/vhs recorder March 9, 2010 Mr. Darryl L. Tester (ipswich u.k) OK for the price but be warned there is no 'thumbnail' picture on the dvd after the disc is finalized which most other dvd recorders do (just a small box with a written desription of the av source) Also worth noting that you dont get a signal to your t.v if tuning to view via the R.F connection (this is quite common with freeview receivers, so you have to connect via the SCART lead. The toshiba helpline wasnt that helpfull either after waiting on the phone for 25 minutes in a queue waiting to speak with an adviser! Suggest spending a bit more money on a panasonic which is more reliable. -d.t (Ipswich )
my purchase March 9, 2010 M. Tomkins Overall I was very pleased with my purchase. I connected everything up really quickly and wanted to see what all the menus were about and what all the 39 buttons on the remote did. I spent a bit of time reading the owners manual 'til I got bored, so I tried recording from my sky box, all went well until I found that I had not changed the input and had recorded the DVB channel. Then I noticed that the sound volume on the DVB channels was going up and down by itself, so I thought that I had bought a faulty recorder. I checked the troubleshooting pages in the manual - no help, so I went online to ask Toshiba what the problem was and they wanted me to phone them and go into detail about the connections etc. I wondered if it was one of the audio settings and pressed the AD button and turned off the audio description - Hey presto sound was now ok. Nothing in the manual about this and Toshiba did not recognise the problem. I have yet to do a DVD recording, this should be interesting . . . Watch this space!
Not a bad unit! March 8, 2010 Ruseph (York, England (The Original Capital City)) I ended up getting this as my old dvd/vcr had packed up.
I was actually wanting to get a Panasonic DMR-EX98 to use the Viera function on the remotes etc and not have another remote control on the sofa, but they had recently been discontinued, and at the time only about 8 weeks ago they seemed to be no replacement, so I settled for this, and it was about £200 less than the Panasonic anyway.
I am a but annoyed as just a week ago Panasonic launched their new version the DMR-EX99 (virtually the same but with new software in it)but this is still nearly £200 more than the Toshiba, so for most won't be worth it.
Don't get me wrong I do like this Toshiba, but having never owned a multi-recorder or PVR before I haven't go much to go on.
So far I have mainly used the Hard drive to record from freeview and I really like the tv guide single/daily/series link recording, very easy to use!
I also like the suggestion mode when you have inadvertently overlapped programs, and it comes up with alternative screening times to choose.
I also really like the fact that just like a PC you can watch from the hard drive at the same time as recording to it, where for example you can catch up on programs already recorded with adverts and save about 15 minutes in every hour, and you can add more programs to the timer record function even while recording (unlike most old VCRs)
Only slight drawback is that you can't program from the guide while it's already recording (as it uses the tv tuner to display this and doesn't have a twin digital/freeview tuner), but you can in my case just switch to TV guide on the tv to check program times then flick back over AV source so not too much of a problem really.
For the top menu the 6 panel recording display with titles is a real easy way to choose your recording to watch, where the programs start playing in small screens as you move over them, and a simple click of 'Play' or 'ok' & 'resume' etc starts/ deletes or edits your programs.
The pause live tv or resume playback in recordings is also a really useful function if you get interrupted or or get a phone call etc.
I have nearly filled the hard drive in a few weeks where I've been busy and not had time to watch programs, so 250GB is really not that big when recording in SP mode.
I don't recommend using any less quality grade unless you have a small screen, as on my 42" 1080P screen when viewing a LP or lower grade recording the picture was pretty awful. It did however look ok in LP on the 17" picture-in-picture mode on my TV which uses almost the same number of pixels as an old CRT), so if you have a screen this size them you'll be able to record loads more on the lower grades. There are about 5 recording grades (I forgot exactly how many), and for the highest grade XP I did not notice much improvement over SP either.
The viewing picture is improved watching via HDMI cable rather than a scart socket, so if you have one of those on your TV then use it.
It's a shame that these don't have bigger drives as memory is so cheap these days it would have only been about £20-30 more for a 500GB.
I am hoping that I can at some point tinker with the unit and upgrade to 500gb as it has 2.5" sata drive according to the manual(although this is probably not possible! due to software)
The manual is quite extensive and is better than many for explaining all the functions and possible problems you may encounter, many of which have simple and logical reasons and aren't faults such as the copyright thing below.
So far I have not used the VCR function to record or play back, even though I had intended to use it to copy all my old tapes onto DVDs, as it seems that on first attempt this fails, due to copyright laws, and that even though as the owner of the tapes (shop bought films etc), they are encoded so you can't copy them even if it is for your own use! So I guess this won't be used for this after all (hadn't checked this first and naively thought this wouldn't be a problem as I do this for all my cds)
DVD player and recorder works well & records just as easy as the hard drive, although again haven't used it much as the DVD recorder I was going to record all my old VHS tapes, and I tend to use my Panasonic Blu-ray player for discs as the upscaler is slightly better. But will use it on RW discs when I fill up the hard drive.
One thing that is also bugging me is that the cooling fan seems to be on all the time even when put in standby unless the unit has no programs set up, which can be noisy if your trying to sleep in the same room (guests etc using sofa bed), so unfortunately so far the only way to solve this is to switch off at the mains and then it of course forgets all the timer recordings you may have set up!, but this is a small problem.
It's still a pretty good gadget and wish I'd got one years ago.
Toshiba PVR March 8, 2010 J. Neill (Troon, Scotland) First unit I received was faulty - problem with sound. Procedure for returning unit very straightforward. New unit received the day after old one collected.
I love this PVR. Very easy to use. Instruction book could be laid out better.
