5 out of 5 stars Its got dad's approval!   February 15, 2010

Does everything it says on the tin, easy to set up and use. Bought it as a gift for my 72 year old dad and he got to grips with its capabilities in no time at all and he loves it! I researched many recorders before purchase and this one ticked all the boxes from price to ease of use. Big thumbs up from me and my dad :-)

2 out of 5 stars Looks great - doesn't perform - unless you want perma-sub-titles!   February 14, 2010

Nighmare machine is giving me a headache. I bought it to replace my old humax 160gig PVR which recently burnt itself out after a good innings and I fancied treating myself to new dvd player as well, so this all-in-one seemed the perfect solution, especially as it looks so sleek and elegant.
Don't be deceived by it's good looks - the first disappointment comes after set up (which was easy, in spite of the useless instruction manual). It's not nearly so intuitive to use/user friendly as the humax. I hate the unweildly way you have to access the menus and the use of icons instead of text (in recorded programme list) is annoying. But then things got worse every time the unit starts to record, it defaults to subtitle mode and believe me, it is a nightmare turning them off.... especially as, to make matters worse, unit does not always respond to commands via remote ctrl.
Perhaps most irrating of all, if you're watching a dvd (or a different channel) as the unit starts a pre-programmed record, the dvd switches off and picture diverts to the new recording, and, of course: on come the subtitles (which incidentally are not even in time with the picture). Watching TV is supposed to be a relaxing experience and this badly thought out piece of *** could drive you nutty. Its going straight back to the shop.

4 out of 5 stars Few small problems, otherwise excellent   February 13, 2010

This is a great machine - it's very easy to use, looks great and good value for money! There are plenty of recording options and the timeshift feature is really useful when you just want to nip out and make a cup of tea. Removing adverts etc from recorded shows is really easy to do too.

The only problems I've encountered are: the automatic software update always freezes. I had to set it to manual instead. It can be difficult to cancel a series recording - it took two or three attempts to get rid of something from the timer. Everytime I went back, a show had reappeared. The power button is above the disc tray, and the open/close button is on the other end of the machine - I keep forgetting and hitting the wrong button!

These are minor annoyances, otherwise I love this machine and would definitely recommend it, especially to those who aren't great with technology.

1 out of 5 stars Multi-Region   February 4, 2010

Multi Region Hack for LG RHT497H:

Switch the player on
When ON hold down CLEAR on remote and PROG Down on the front panel for 6 seconds
A list of codes appear
Change OP6 from aa to 8e
Press Enter and then menu/list on your remote

BTW, I wouldn't recommend this to anyone...SO many faults and all LG customer service can tell me is "Well...I really don't know what we can do about that". Thanks, big help.

The latest problem is the clock is losing ten minutes a day. How on Earth does that happen with modern technology ?

5 out of 5 stars LG 497H HDD Digital TV/DVD Recorder - absolutely brilliant!   January 30, 2010

Bought this product to replace an ageing VCR and DVD player - absolutely brilliant purchase! Easy to set up and connect to TV and very simple to navigate around instructions. Recording is so simple - using the built-in TV Guide you just select the programme and press the record button - no tapes, discs or anything to worry about, no fiddling about with inputting dates, times, channels, etc and wondering if you've set it right! For recording stuff that you just want to watch once and then delete, the hard-drive memory seems huge (about 80 hours) so most of the time you can record straight onto that without using a disc and then just delete it again, but for things you want to keep, having the facility to copy onto disc is really useful too. The facility to pause live TV (e.g. when the phone rings) is also simple to operate and a great idea. Overall, I'm really impressed - really good value for money.
