1 out of 5 stars Looks great, doesn't work   June 27, 2010

It is difficult to review this product, since I never got it to work.
We have an LG digital television and so assumed that a DVD recorder from the same manufacturer would work well with it. Unfortunately when setting it up it was totally unable to tune in to any of the freeview channels available in our area, channels that the tv picks up perfectly. So I returned it. On the plus side it did look very smart. Next time I think I'll do what all my friends suggested and buy a Panasonic.

A word about Amazon, their delivery/collection times were incredibly fast and they made no quibble about the return of the item. Also they refunded my money immediately. If only all retailers delivered this level of customer service.

Probably the worst piece of equipment I've owned, it was virtually useless.
Very slow or did not respond to remote, picture would go dark or 'negative' colour,
completely failed to record a timed recording set via the epg, insted it recorded off the analogue tuner which was not tuned in anyway! when I next turned it on it had lost all digital channels and decided to display non-existant analogue channel, LG really ought to get their act together, previouly owned LG dvd recorder with analogue tuner, this has worked faultlessly for 5 years. Do not buy one what ever you do!

5 out of 5 stars Quality DVD Recorder   May 10, 2010

When my little used Samsung DVD HR755 (250GB) decided to stop playing pre-recorded DVDs, I decided to give LG a try. I'm very glad I did as the LG RHT498H is a great little machine and operates not only faster, but gives better results (DVD and TV) than the Samsung.
Only one thing which lets things down and it's been mentioned by other reviewers, the operator's manual is very, very poor. Unlike the Samsung manuals (TV and DVD) which cover every aspect of the machine's operation, the LG manual covers just the very bare escentials.
In summary: Machine great, manuals very poor.

2 out of 5 stars Spend the extra cash. Buy a better brand.   May 7, 2010

When you get your LG DVD Recorder home the first disappointment will be that despite its snazzy looks, the build quality is utter pants; the DVD tray wobbles about and is made from wafer-thin plastic, the remote is poor and some of the menu options read like the village idiot wrote them.

The second disappointment will be next day when you turn on the TV and find the machine has locked up during its firmware auto-update. You will have to pull the plug from the wall to reset the machine. Auto-update is on by default, so you will have to find it and turn it off - this has been a problem for every one of the 497s and 498s for 2 years. Because the auto-update doesn't work, you can't fix the software(dur). You will have to ring LG to send you the update on DVD. Hilariously, the new update they have sent you doesn't fix the auto-update problem. This causes a critical spacetime paradox loop effect from which no-one will escape.

The third disappointment will be when you try to record free-view and find that the machine insists on displaying the subtitles during recording. You will try suggested fixes like turning off the Digital TV subtitles in 'settings' but this won't work for some of you because each machine has its own wonderful personality. The only thing that gets rid of them on my machine is setting the subtitle language to German.

The fourth disappointment is when you realise the clock sometimes gets stuck after recording and displays the wrong time until the machine is switched off. Again, a known problem for years.

The fifth disappointment is when you try to use the fast dub feature and find that it won't work if you edit your recordings in any way, rendering the function close to useless.

The final disappointment will be when it sinks in that you own this machine.

On the positive side, some day soon it will probably break.

4 out of 5 stars The Good, The Bad and The Ugly   April 11, 2010

We just purchased an LG TV and as we were thoroughly impressed with it, I begged my wife for us to get this recorder unit. Well, I wanted to share my experience with you all. Here's the good the bad and the ugly.

The Good:
* It does what it's mainly meant to do - records to HDD or DVD fine. Plays DVDs fine. Can record to HDD and transfer to DVD. Can record a program and watch it as it records.
* There is no noise from the unit.
* There are no adverts like on Panasonic units.
* It's a very fair price!!!!!!!
* A reasonable hard drive space is great.

The Bad:
Does not come with hdmi cable. Most other units probably don't either and you can get one from the pound shop these days.

Can't record and watch a different channel. Having one freeview tuner (for me) really is not a problem, since a modern LG TV comes with one, but this means you can't record two programs at the same time either. I guess it's still a minor point as competition does not generally have twin tuners as yet either.

The set up could have been a bit quicker. Some other manufacturers can transfer available freeview channels to the HDD so there is no delay. However it's a very minor thing as it was easy anyway.

The remote control. It's light, which is fine. The buttons are much smaller than on LG TV, but that is still ok. But the idea of being able to use just one remote to operate both appliances does not work 100%. If you are using the TV's remote the return button does not work. And if you are using the HDD's remote - there is no mute button, which to me is a bit of an oversight. No matter though, I can live with that.

The LG television's menus have a better `feel' than those of the HDD unit. Just saying - manage your expectations if you have an LG TV...

The middle button on the actual unit feels rather flimsy. Fortunately I never have to touch it as always use the remote.

The Ugly:
The only acceptable recording mode is either SP or LP - any less than that and the picture is not really good enough. So 700 hours+ of recording time is really a marketing ploy, not sure they can justify that. Realistically you have 250 hours to play with. Well, that's still fine with me, but I wish I knew this beforehand.

Software upgrade does not appear to work; I am not sure how long it's supposed to take - I set it off manually it just gets half way and stops. After half an hour I generally give up. You can abort at this point. I think it's a tech support issue...

Some other manufacturers can cut out adverts by detecting them. There is no such thing here. You can EDIT the program - and to do that you have to find the start -stop points and delete them yourself. I'm sure you have better things to do so this is really rubbish. Don't like it one bit.

The auto chapters don't appear to work either. Don't know why.

If you quit watching a recorded program you return to the start. Unless you set a 'marker' you have to fast forward to the point you left it at. A bit annoying.

In conclusion, having looked around and despite the bad points, I believe this unit is still very good value for money. Especially having seen the reviews for other manufacturers. But there's one thing to consider - Freeview HD is coming out soon. You might want to wait until there is a new version of this unit. I don't know the time scales - just think it might be worth the wait. Hopefully it would have improved by then as well. But I still like the freedom of being able to record programs on schedule for a fair price. I love it regardless of it's faults.
