1 out of 5 stars Samsung DVD SH897M   June 4, 2010

DO NOT BUY THIS MACHINE. If I could rate lower than one star I would.
It has been faulty from when we first purchased it in December 2009 and has been in for repair 4 times since then. It has frozen and has software updated. The red record guide fails to show up sometimes on the EPG to let you know that you have set the machine to record. My biggest bug bear it that although manual states that you can record a series with just one set up this is impossible. It will only do a series recording if the series is on everyday for one week and no more, does anyone know of a series like this. As as far as I'm concerned the majority of programmes in a series are on weekly over a number of weeks then this function is completely useless! It means that you cannot set it up to record your programmes whilst on 2 weeks vacation. This was the reason I bought the machine as I was fed up of having to manually set each weeks time and date on my current one, which I'm having to change as it is old and won't record digital. I bought it with a new Samsung TV and given Samsungs reputation I thought this was a good move - how wrong I was. I will not be buying any Samsung electronics in the future and have been very disappointed by their attitude.

1 out of 5 stars DVD-SH897M - Don't Buy It!   April 2, 2010

DO NOT BUY THIS UNIT!
I've had to return the DVD-SH897M as it fails to work appropriately - the faults appear to be there by design and make it completely unfit for purpose!
The unit is supposed to show Freeview (it does this very well), BUT I was unable to persuade it to record or playback properly despite several hours reading the manual/trying.
The GUIDE takes over a second to scroll each line - so trying to look down the currently-playing TV programs is excrutiating!
The INFO button should tell you about the program (Dr Who meets the Daleks etc) but tells you irrelevant info about the signal etc.
No idea about the DVD/USB etc features because the basics of the unit fail so miserably.

No external packaging other than the manufacturers box.

3 out of 5 stars SAMSUNG DVD RECORDER SH897   February 21, 2010

This is the third dvd recorder in the Samsung range that I have bought, and to be honest they have not improved. Loading programmes is extremely slow, and it gets stuck. I have spoken to Samsung and they have sent me a disc to update but it has made no difference on either machine. The HR750 which is non digital is actually more efficient, the SH871 and 897 are the same, very slow in programme loading and both have occasion to stick. Not impressed with Samsung on this particular type of product. Especially after paying over £200 each.

1 out of 5 stars Limitation   January 10, 2010

Bought this product as I had bought Samsung TVs that have all been great. Would have bought a Samsung DVD/HD recorder a couple of years ago but they didn't have a dtv tuner in them at the time. Bought a Panasonic instead which has been and still is excellent. Having now bought the Samsung DVD/HD recorder, I was amazed to find out that the timer record will only work if the machine is put on standby. That means you can't watch anything else through it whilst it is recording and if you power it on inadvertently or forget to power it off, you do not record the things you expected to. It's going back and I will get something better that is similar to the spec of a 2 year old Panasonic machine.
My machine is not as noisy as the other reviews seem to suggest though.

1 out of 5 stars Appalling piece of equipment, first and last ever Samsung purchase   January 4, 2010

Why is it not possible to rate with a negative number, I would like to propose minus 5 stars for this product, however the minimum allowable is just 1.
I was shocked with the lack of quality of this product, I made an assumption things like hard drive recorder / DVD's are all the same. WRONG. I was attracted to the smooth lines of the design and the touch style user interface (I never saw it powered up before I bought it). The front display is literally impossible to see from more than 30cm away so whats the point, and secondly it tells you virtually nothing such as what channel yoo might be recording!
The on-screen software such as the TV programming guide, is really boxy, slow to load and clumsy to use (like 1970's layout, programmed by a 12 year old or something), its actually embarressing. For example if you record a show, the editing functions impossible to follow and forget trying to refer to the instruction manual which is the worst I've ever seen (and its printed in light-grey colour, its barely legible and there are no examples to follow).

- The Userguide is poor in its English, but worse than that not informative other than for the most basic of requirements
- Once you've recorded a program, the on screen display doesn't automatically name the program recorded (you have to do this manually which is boring and time consuming)
- The TV day guide refreshes slowly, a bit like old fashioned teletext pages
- The handset layout makes it very easy to press the wrong button e.g. fast forward and skip to next program (REALLY ANNOYING)
- DVD played is incredibly noisy, you have to increase the TV volume to overcome it!
- Software is SO slow to use
- Remote control is long and thin (hard to see buttons), plus the layout makes it easy to hot SKIP instead of Fast forward (or reverse) - thats ANNOYING
- Viewing photos on USB stick, very poor image quality (unusable in practice)
- Un-usable editing functions

In the past I've always bought Sony and Panasonic products, and without doubt there is a quantum leap in quality difference. Samsung, you sell a customer a product like this and you will never sell me another thing in the future. Its the worst electronics device I've ever purchased by a million miles.

UPDATE - I returned this product to my store (and I told them what I thought of their advice in helping me select it in the first place) and went for a Panasonic EX89, and within 30 seconds (now 3 months ...) I'm in love with this machine. Everything poor about the Samsung, is miles better with the Pana. So now, conversely: I have a silent DVD drive, an SD and a USB slot and crystal clear photos - beautiful), an ergonomic and intelligent remote control, Fast software and a cool TV guide (and I don't care about the advertising taking up a quarter of the screen ... I suppose that subsidises the price and increases this amazing quality).

Do yourself a favour - DO NOT BUY the Samsung, you will be massively disappointed.
If you are foolish enough to do so, pre-book an appointment at your GP to request anti-depressants.
