Frustrating when recording off camcorder May 28, 2010 N. BOWERS I thought this DVD recorder player was the business, but today it has frozen three times on me when making a DVD from a camcorder via the DV lead. Last one was a 57 minute tape, DVD it did at 54 minutes. Have been onto the internet and this is a regular problem. My advice, stay well clear.......No t recommended
Avoid at all costs ! May 26, 2010 A. Searle (Dorset, UK) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Samsung did have a reputation for good products, but after using this monstrosity for quite some time I feel its only right to warn others to avoid it at all costs. It is uneccessarily slow, unreliable poorly designed and just pretty awful to live with.
Firstly the freeview part of this player is the worst I have ever used. The guide is painfully slow and so frustrating to use, you feel like launching the whole unit out the window.
The recording is unreliable at best, recording when IT feels like it, and if it does manage to record something invariably it will cut it short (with no way to manage the amount of time it leaves at the end of a program).
The DVD is "OK" but will freeze up once every now and again just when you think all is going well. That's funny just as I am writing this review the unit has frozen up again just watching freeview!
I can't be bothered to list anymore bad points of this totally rubbish product.
Avoid at all costs, you have been warned.
Awful user interface - don't buy this May 14, 2010 Yorky (UK) I have been struggling to get an HDD recorded programme to play back for 8 months and have failed despite spending over an hour on the customer help line.
This recorder may have outstanding technical specifications, but it does not work. The handbook doesn't refer to playing back recordings.
Samsung hold your head in shame for the SH893 May 11, 2010 Mme Murielle Mccarthy (France) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is the first time I have been motivated to leave a review. I can only echo what other reviewers have said which is that this machine is absolutely awful, a really frustrating piece of kit. It is all down to the user interface as the hardware specs. are decent. Avoid like the plague and punish Samsung for releasing this garbage by avoiding their other wares. I tried the patch but it did not appear to take. no instructions available on how to apply it. The reviewer who said he had no problems is clearly a Samsung employee! Gave it a one star as zero stars wasn't an option.
What is everyone else's problem? April 14, 2010 M. Ferry (UK) 11 out of 12 found this review helpful
I will have to start off by saying that I do not have a clue what any of the negative reviewers were doing to have all the problems they described. Even BEFORE the firmware upgrade, I did not have any of the problems that are being described. I have since upgraded to see if there was any difference, but there does not appear to be any benefit from it. I should also add that I am experienced in the field of electronics, but even my Mother who really isn't, is having no issues with this recorder after I have shown her the basics on how to work it.
@ the people that say you cannot change the recording quality, this is WRONG, you can.
@ the people that say that the unit is sluggish, well, it's really not. Ok it has to seal the sectors of the disc and the end of each recording, but all optical recorders have to do this and it always takes a few seconds. The EPG is also pretty responsive, infact, I cannot think on a feature I have used on the machine that is not snappy to respond. Oh, and I am very impatient when it comes to response times of devices.
The only reasons that I have chosen not to give this 5 stars, is due to 2 minor issues:
1) the unit has hung (frozen) on me ONCE, to which the only remedy was to unplug it at the wall and switch back on. This has not happened again so it should not be an issue
2) the remote occasionally decides to not allow you to use the number buttons to change the channel. This is not really an issue however, as if you hit the OK button it presents you with a menu of all the channels that you can quickly (as opposed to sluggishly...) flick through to choose your channel. There is also of course the 3rd option of using the EPG to choose your channel.
One other noticeable point is that if you have another DVD recorder in your home and will maybe record on one unit and watch on another, this machine appears to use a different formatting method for the discs, and there are slight issues in that if I erase/format the disc on this machine it will not work on my other (Sanyo) machine. This works in reverse as well though, and upon inserting a formatted disc from the Sanyo into this machine, it simply states that it needs reformatted to use it. For watching recorded content however, cross platform usage is not an issue.
But hey, nothings perfect. If you want to get closer to that fantasy value of perfection though, then go and spend the extra on as said by others, a Sony or Panasonic. Considering that I picked this unit up for £80, I really cant fault it for the array of features and functionality it offers.
On the whole, if you aren't willing to spend that bit extra on a dearer unit, and you are either technically minded or can spend half an hour or so going through the menus to familiarise with the machine as most people will with anything new, then this machine doesn't (in my opinion) have any major faults that should make it a "must avoid" unit.
