4 out of 5 stars Thomson Top Up TV DTI6021-50-Great piece of kit   April 10, 2010

I live between London and the Midlands and can't justify having full cable/pay television services at both places, so DTR and Top Up TV came up as affordable alternatives. I was convinced the smaller storage G1 Thomson DTRs weren't sufficient for what I needed, so I decided to purchase the 500 GB G2 model. Set up was simple and it worked perfectly with my HD television. It is also a nicely-compact model, smaller than most other 'boxes' I've had with Sky and Virgin. I haven't had a single problem with it, and it hasn't required any resets or power-offs that I've read about in other reviews. Whilst the services with TopUp TV itself aren't as wide as other pay TV offerings, they are very reasonably priced and also aren't necessary to take advantage of this recorder. I particularly like the ability to record two channels at once and the 'Sky+ style' remote. The only reason I've not graded this a '5' is the fact it doesn't have an HDMI 'out'. This has become the norm in the past few years. However, the picture via SCART is more than satisfactory on my HD LCD television. I'm strongly leaning towards ditching my cable service at home and buying a second for there.

1 out of 5 stars Worst piece of junk I have ever bought   February 13, 2010

Firstly I didn't get this from Amazon, I got it in a sale for half price and still feel I was robbed. It has too many faults to list. It lost everything from the hard-drive the other day, it locks up and needs to be powered off, it goes into a standby mode and won't reset without a power off. I have to power this of most days. Do not waste your money on this pile of junk, even if its being given away.

This is a very good and reliable product with a terrific memory for the price.
As a subscriber to Top Up TV the extra memory was essential for me.

1 out of 5 stars Stay away   April 17, 2009

Stay away from thomson, they have made millions of people very unhappy with the sub standard digital tv equipment. My box would lock out at least 2 times a week and then every 2 months or so would need formatting because as the error message said 'all of your recordings have become corrupt'.

Buy a panasonic thats my advice
