5 out of 5 stars Slingcatcher   July 9, 2010

I bought this item to use in America. Its a great product which was easy to use. However you must configure it with youre home network (in my case in the UK) before you take it abroad. Then you can just plug it in and it works great. It would be nice if it came with a USA plug, as the UK plug it comes with is rather bulky when combined with an adapter.

4 out of 5 stars Sling Catcher   March 25, 2010

If you live abroad and wish to watch British TV on your TV abroad then the sling catcher together with the Slingbox is great solution. If you have a slow broadband as I have in malaysia the picture can be less sharp than I would like. But I think its a great product that gives me access to my Virgin+ box in uk via the slingcatcher remote control. If you are happy to watch the UK TV via a computer then you only need the slingbox.

5 out of 5 stars Important to know if using with PowerLine network link   February 27, 2010

I use PowerLine throughout my house so hooked up both my SlingBox and SlingCatcher using a pair of standard 85Mb PowerLine connectors. I found that the SlingBox worked well and I could watch TV on my PC fine using SlingPlayer with reported bit rates up to 6000kb/s (doesn't seem to need more than 2500kb/s for a good picture). When I tried my SlingCatcher, I couldn't get bit rates higher than 1000kb/s, the picture was not very good and it would stutter terribly and occasionally hang. Verging on unwatchable. I was going to send it back.

After a bit of experimentation, I found that the SlingCatcher power supply was causing noise on the electrical socket and destroying the PowerLine bit rate. Solution is easy - use a surge protecting socket for the SlingCatcher while keeping the PowerLine plugged into the unfiltered socket. My SlingCatcher bit rate is up at 5500kb/s now and working very well. Crazy that this is not documented anywhere. It's the SlingCatcher power supply that's causing the trouble.

Picture *quality* doesn't go above 2500kb/s though - about the same as analogue TV - even if you get the full rate.

4 out of 5 stars A must have for all expats   February 1, 2010

Easy set-up, streams very well and great for all expats. Don't forget that it is the receiver, you will need a friend/family relatives to plug a slingbox in their home.

3 out of 5 stars Caveat Emptor?   December 4, 2009

Slingboxes are great. Watching British TV in a remote place like a hotel room in Latvia is a unique experience. I have had several Slingboxes in recent years, and that is the problem. As great as a product that they are I have never owned any of Sling's products that have lasted more than eighteen months before they fail. My last Slingbox lasted only thirteen months! My personal experiences must be more than just bad luck. Our libel laws being what they are makes me careful what I write here, but may I suggest without prejudice that perhaps they come along with some built-in obsolescence. Let the buyer beware...
