Toshiba RD88DT freeview recorder April 3, 2010 G. W. Rowland (Wales) I purchased this recorder to replace my Philips HDR 3700 which had a prolem with the tv guide, and Philips did not seem to be interested, alas after setting this recorder up it appears it uses the same software as the Philips, and Toshiba do not want to know about it either, the fault is that both recorders have is that when setting up timer recording using the EPG programmes go in ok but when I put the recorders into stanby the hard drive keeps running, I left it for several hous but it kept running on both recorders, they are both fine if I put programmes in manually, so I cannot recommned this recorder
Let down by interface and digital tuner January 4, 2010 Navrig, (Scotland) I bought this to go with a Toshiba TV on the assumption that the "Regza" link would help the family with remote control confusion. It didn't and doesn't seem to that much of a feature.
The quality of DVD playback is good.
Bootup is slow.
Quality of digital tuner is very poor and I think faulty. There is loads of breakup on certain channels which are fine on the Toshiba TV tuner. I posted comparisons on avforums if anyone is interested. Search for 88DTKB.
Once I have taken the HDD content off (onto DVD) it will be going back as faulty.
The interface menu is poor.
Good...but! December 14, 2009 PJ Batten (Hampshire, England) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This Toshiba product is like so many modern gadgets. It's brilliant but has loads more features than the average user will ever need and like the Panasonic DVD recorder it's replaced the manual is apparently written in Martian. Using a glance at it and a lot of intuition sorted out the basics and there it will probably end for me. Sky+ is the benchmark for this sort of product in terms of user friendliness and like everything else, the Toshiba doesn't come close. There's a lot of faffing about switching the TV remote between TV and AV, the menus are clumsy and then you've still got to remember to push the right button to move between HDD and DVD. That said the quality of the picture and sound is great and the amount of storage more than enough and now that I've moved to an area with Freeview reception I'm not stumping up £30 a month for a choice of several hundred channels, 80% of which I'll never watch. The quality of DVD playback with upscaling is also excellent. So, all in all a good bit of kit only getting 4 stars because of its complication and the user manual being poor.
be aware December 6, 2009 J. A. Welsh Never came across a recorder that outputs whilst offline recording, the first time i was watching a freeview program on my tv and the recorder came on and switched to the av channel to watch the program i was recording how wierd! i rang toshiba and they confirmed that it does that, they reckommended to remove pin 8 of the scart lead to stop the recorder switching, not good, the recorder it self is good a little hard at first to master.
Good quality product,no complaints so far.... December 4, 2009 S. Mcgowan (uk) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I bought this unit because it looked ok,the reviews were good and I was fed up with a freeview box,dvd player etc cluttering up my living room.I have only had the unit a week and think it's very good value for money, good picture quality which works with my Toshiba tv.
My last dvd recorder was a Phillips which was dreadful.
