2 out of 5 stars Noisy and Slow   May 22, 2010
Andrew Riley (Reading)
I've had this machine for over a year now and while to be honest, it does do its job, it doesn't do it well and it is absolutely no frills.

So, what's good about it? It's got a massive hard drive, at the moment it's sitting here with about 20 movies and 20 tv shows on and it still has plenty of space left. The signal is a clear as I got through my old freeview box and the DVD playback, pause, scanning and recording quality are all good.

So, what's bad?
It's noise. Really noisy. About as loud as my fridge/freezer in fact when it's turned on.
It's slow. Takes a good second to respond to pushing a button on the remote.
The EPG is terrible. The interface shows you 5 channels of now and next at a time or one channel at a time. There's no search, no series link, no ability to look any further than next on more than one channel at a time. And you can't change to a channel while looking at it's in depth screen, only from the now and next view.
The timer set up is unwieldy, it takes about 5 screens to put something onto record and at the end you're dumped out to the tv. Good luck if you're trying to set up a few things to record at once, it takes ages.
When you're recording something onto a DVD from the Harddrive, the box makes you watch it at the same time.
The HD doesn't always delete things properly. Sometimes they come back a day or so later.
The front display only shows the time when it's on standby. Maybe that's a minor thing, but I don't need a big green "1" blazing out at me all the time, I can see what channel I'm on from looking at the screen.

That's about it really. I'd recommend looking elsewhere, but it does do the basic job that I wanted when I bought it, so it is worth the 2 stars.

1 out of 5 stars Rubbish!   March 9, 2008

Yesterday, my husband bought this DVD recorder to go with our new Toshiba TV and, on paper, it seemed a good buy. 250GB of hard drive space, a reasonable price. On taking it home and setting it up, it became obvious that all was not well. It is noisy with a really audible humming noise. Trying to press a channel number on the remote didn't seem to work, we then realised that it was because it was so slow to respond. The remote control is made of plastic and not even smooth plastic at that! The recorder really feels cheaply made and looks like it has been put together in some third world country. Needless to say, it's gone back to the shop this morning and we have bought a Panasonic instead! Interestingly, we thought that the Toshiba's humming noise might be due to the fact that it has a hard drive but our new Panasonic is quiet, so it's not the reason. We already have another Panasonic DVD Recorder and I am really impressed with Panasonic, it's really easy to use and, if you also have a Panasonic TV, you can use a feature exclusive to Panasonic: Direct TV Recording: if you are watching TV and you realise you really want to record what you have started watching, you press a button and the DVD recorder records automatically what you are watching.

1 out of 5 stars poor product from a good brand   January 20, 2008

I bought this as I have a Toshiba HD TV. Very happy with the TV, this product is poor, poor menus, poor setup, poor HDMI connectivity. It actually worked better through SCART than HDMI. Even simply playing a DVD caused flickering on the top and pottom 4 to 5 pixels when using HDMI.

This is my first dip into DVD Recorder/HDMI waters & did lots of research before buying this player,I have a Toshiba 37" LCD so that swayed me somewhat. I have had none of the problems written about by the other reviewers, It's been easy to to set up has performed without a hitch in every aspect,ok The build quality is'nt great but overall good value for money I also use a learning remote to control all the system so the original remote is not required.

Considering the price & all the features it has I think I got a good buy & not at all disapointed I therefore give it 5 stars.

1 out of 5 stars Toshiba RD970 250 HDD & DVD recorder   December 31, 2007

I have to admitt I didn't buy this piece of equipment through Amazon as it was a last minute purchase on Xmas Eve but felt I had to write this review as I have used them in the past. Got it home tried to set it up nothing just the Toshiba welcome screen end of story till after Xmas. Exchanged it for another on the 27/12 plugged it in and away we went and in a couple of minutes it was up and running. Tested all the facilities in the next three days, EPG was missing half the info on the channels, changing channels was slow and the handset was not precise some times you had to press the buttom twice especially the TOP MENU button which seemed to have a mind of it's own, the handset was also difficult to read 'off white on black'. The channel reception was not great at times but the HDD worked fine and also the record option onto DVD. There is no volume control on the handset and you can only watch the channel you are currently recording, very fustrating. So after three days I decided enough was enough and back it went in exchange for a Humax 9200T our second and a fine piece of equipment it is too but no DVD!

So until Toshiba get their act together I would give the RD970 a miss.
