3 out of 5 stars Good - But doesnt do what it supposed to do.   December 9, 2007

Like another reviewer I purchased this item from Avides. Delivery was pretty quick, unfortunately not all the accessories were included. No USB lead, no USB host lead and no anttena cable/carrying case. Emailed Avides and they apologised and said they would send missing items. They did, but over some period of time. Actually they were friendly to deal with and an honest mistake I can accept.

Potentially an awsome piece of kit, however mine does not record directly from a TV or Sat box like it is supposed to do. Recording direct from DVD player is not a problem. Digital Freeview aspect is fine and I have had it working in trains and cars, on the move.

Plenty of scope for keeping your music, photos too.

Perhaps I should have payed the full price from a recommended outlet, as this one was reasonably cheap compared to the RRP.

2 out of 5 stars LOUSY TECHNICAL SUPPORT   June 24, 2007

The Archos needs a few plug-ins to play all your files, though why they're not just provided on a product at this price I can't understand. I've paid for the 2 plug-ins I need, but despite attempts to download them on several different computers I just keep getting the message 'Decompression Failed'. Attempts to contact Archos so-called Technical Support have been totally fruitless. Save your money and have nothing to do with this second-rate company until they upgrade their technical support

I've been fancying one of these for years but they were incredibly expensive until now, Bought mine from Amazon Marketplace via Avides Media. I ordered it very late on Tuesday night it arrived Friday morning all the way from Germany to the UK. The description said slight damage to packaging and I must admit I was a little worried till it arrived but don't let it put you off if you're thinking of buying one. The damage to the box was barely noticable and the contents were perfect.

Now for the product. All I can say is WOW!! Apart from having to charge it, there was nothing I needed to do in order to get it to work flawlessly with all the .avi files I threw at it. No stuttering, no codec issues. Very quick to transfer your files either from your hard drive or DVD-ROM drive. Only thing I would say is, I am running Windows Vista and although I have the latest firmware on the Archos, it didn't seem to like handling large file transfers in "Windows Device" mode. If you have any problems where copying files fails for any reason just go into "Display Setup Screen", then go to System and under "USB Port" select "Hard Drive" then connect to your PC and just treat as an external hard drive. It then works perfectly. I transferred 2.5 Gb of Prison Break avi files through my DVD-ROM in less than 5 minutes!

There are also loads of accessories bundled with this device. You get earphones (which are very good!), USB lead, USB host lead so you can connect your MP3 player or Digi Camera directly to it, an AV lead to connect to your TV, carry pouch for the unit, two aerials in a carry case so you can receive Freeview (and record it) on the device and two suckers to attach the aerials to the inside of your car windows. The first time I tried the Freeview in the car I got almost 50 channels!! You also get a lead to plug the device into your existing home aerial to make sure you get the best reception and you can schedule it to record TV directly onto your device to watch later. There is a little 'kickstand' on the back of the unit so you can stand it on a table to watch and you can get a fairly cheap suction mount for the car.

I don't know what more I can say about this amazing little gadget; if you are considering buying one, take my advice and spend the 180 quid, you won't be disappointed - best money I've spent in years!!

5 out of 5 stars Worth Every Penny   March 30, 2007

When I ordered this for our tiny kitchen hubby said it wouldn't be any good, total waste of money etc (can't actually put what he said really or there would be a blank page). Owned it for over six months now and my how he's had to eat his words. When it arrived it took me no more than 20mins and a coffee - 10mins of that reading manual/drinking coffee - and I was watching freeview tv in our kitchen with a crystal clear picture and some channels that were not even showing on our old freeview box in the livingroom! The initial scan for channels took approx 2mins. When he came in from work I wish I had thought to get out the camera because his face was a picture - after oooing and haaaing for several minutes he finally admitted that it was amazing. The screen is very clear and the freeview signal is excellent. The menus are very intuitive and there is on-screen help if you need it. You can record anything you see on freeview with the touch of one button. One thing I would point out is that if you like very loud tv then you will need to purchase portable speakers. We are happy with the sound level at home but when we are away we bought a very small portable set of fold-up aigo speakers which just use the headset plug in the top of the AV700. We have taken it from Scotland to Norfolk, and inbetween, in the past six months and everywhere we've gone there has been no problem with scanning freeview in again. The machine gives you the option of saving several of your scans so you can just key in the scan number if you go back to a location and the freeview works instantly. We've even taken it on the canals and found that ninety percent of the time it works fine even though you are moving constantly. We also bought the hub that allows you to record dvd's onto the machine which we've found invaluable while we are away. Hubby records several dvds and then while we are away if there is nothing on the tv we can watch them. The only problem we found is that we argue over who uses it for what. Another 'cannot fault' item. Worth every single penny to us because we use it more than we use our main LCD tv!
